Symbolize People With Food
A few days back, I heard something interesting on radio. It was about symbolizing people with food. As you may know, western people often symbolized people they loved with food, for example like sugar, honey, muffin or cupcake.
While on the other hand for Chinese people, when we compare somebody with food, it is often related to degradation. People who have obesity problems are called “pork-chop (猪扒)”, red light district workers are either called “chicken (鸡)” for female or “duck (é¸)” for male. If you are slow or done something stupid, you will be addressed as “sweet potato (番薯)”。
Hmm, how come we can’t just use food and address something beautiful instead?
