Laptop Hunting

Recently I’ve been looking through a lot of laptop reviews hoping to find that suits me. You might already know that I’ve already own a laptop, and it’s gonna be 3 years old this October.

Reasons for changing:

  1. Resolution is too low for me (1024 X 768). Making me hard to work on those limited workspace, especially in Photoshop or Macromedia Flash that has a lot of panels all around.
  2. LCD color is not accurate. The colors I see on my notebook are not accurate, so whenever I take my designs done on this laptop, it will differ on other screens.
  3. Not enough processing power. I wanted to do video editing and 3D animation stuff, but the current laptop is not cut out for it.
  4. Not Vista ready. Wanted to run the latest Windows operating system, however the current machine does not have enough RAM, decent graphics, enough usable storage space.
  5. As I said, no decent graphics card. Can’t even have some old 3D games going.
  6. Battery life is pretty much pathetic right now, only about 30 minutes. Even when it was new, the battery life is still bad, only 2 hours on power saving mode.

Things to look into for the new laptop:

  1. Battery life (preferable with 9-cells or 8-cells, wouldn’t want to be like the current one with pathetic battery life even when it was new.)
  2. Brighter LCD screen with higher resolution (13″ - 14″ wide screen LCD with at least 1440 X 900 resolution.)
  3. At least Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz processor.
  4. Discrete graphics card (No more integrated graphics please.)
  5. Easily packed inside a backpack.

Sony VAIO, Lenovo/IBM, Fujitsu is practically out of my range, too expensive :(. Then what’s left is Toshiba, Dell, HP/Compaq. I would have consider Toshiba or HP/Compaq, however the spec is a bit low and pricey compared to Dell. And Dell has more customize options. Then again, I was worried about the built quality of the Dell budget Inspiron laptop models, as they are mostly made up from plastic. So, I started focusing on the business line of Dell’s Latitude laptops.

However, Dell just release the new line of Inspiron with a more study material, magnesium alloy. Moreover, they have revised the designs, packed in a web cam and come with 8 different colors to choose from. They also came out with the new XPS M1330, which is seriously a nicely designed laptop, but a bit expensive for me.

So now, I’m practically reading more laptop reviews and stay on updates with the current laptop models that are coming out. And when the time is right, will most probably get a new one before the end of this year.

Oooh.. the new Inspirons made with magnesium alloy huh? kewl man! Then just go for the 15.4″ Inspirons lah.. 14.1″ Inspirons dont come with discrete graphics, though the integrated one is good enough for Vista (and CS, Starcraft 2 would probably be at it’s limits :p)

Avoid the Toshibas, warranty is a damn pain..

Well for your info, the new 14.1″ Inspirons do come with discrete graphics.
