Lady Illustration

This post is mainly about creating a illustration image out of a sketch I’ve drawn out. First of all, I need to prepared the scanned artwork. Then, using my favorite graphic software again, Photoshop CS to do the trick.

Using the scanned work, it helps me to work better as I can trace the lines and work on my illustration on separated layers on top. Working around using a mouse is still very hard indeed, therefore it sure took some time just to get the skin area colored using the Pen Tool.

Next stop, getting the face done(No, I don’t mean plastic surgery). To make the eyes and face looks more stand out, I’ve added some “make-up” to the face, adding eye shadows and cheek blush. Seriously, the eyes part need to break into number of layers to be painted, especially the eye lashes and pupil part, because it can get screwed up easily.

Not to forget is to paint her some clothes. The illustration still seems to look dead, wait until you see the colors getting toned.

Since I’m aiming more for 2D look, the tone color is more solid and acts more like lines and borders, to reveal the shapes clearly. The tones are mainly done, by duplicating the original colored area, repainted the duplicated area with a darker color. Then, the unwanted areas are shaded off.

Now is the tricky part, the hair. I was having hard time figuring out how to create wavy hair shapes using the mouse. So, to start it off, get the hair base color painted. Followed by duplicating the hair layer, and colored a lighter color on the newly created layer. Then, using the Pen Tool again, I’ve created some wave lines on the hair.

Last but not least, applying the background by choosing a color that can make the model stand out.
